If your child is getting a palatal expander, you may hear us mention separators—tiny but important spacers that help us prepare the mouth before fitting the appliance. But what exactly are they, and how are they placed?

Let’s break it down! 👇

🔹 What Are Separators?

Separators (also called spacers) are small rubber or metal rings placed between the back teeth (molars) to gently create space. They’re used a few days before we fit a palatal expander, which often needs room to anchor to the molars using metal bands.

🔹 How Are They Placed?

Placing separators is quick and simple:

  1. Clean and dry the teeth
We start by making sure the molars are clean and dry for easy placement.
  2. Stretch and slide
Using a special dental tool or floss, the separator is gently stretched and slipped between the molars—just like threading a rubber band between teeth.
  3. It sits snugly
You might feel pressure, like something stuck between your teeth, but that’s a good sign it’s working!
  4. Wait a few days
Separators are usually left in for 3–7 days, giving the teeth enough time to shift slightly and create the space we need.

🔹 What Should I Expect?

  • Mild soreness or pressure is normal for the first 1–2 days.
  • Avoid sticky or chewy foods that could pull them out.
  • Brush gently around the separators (don’t floss that area).
  • If one falls out, give us a call—we may need to replace it before expander placement.

🔹 What Happens Next?

Once enough space is created, we’ll remove the separators, scan your teeth and arrange fit the palatal expander with precision. It’s a small but important step in setting up a successful orthodontic treatment!
