Orthodontic treatment has come a long way, with modern technology making it easier than ever to achieve a straight, healthy smile. One of these advancements is Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs)—a powerful tool used to improve treatment efficiency and results. But what exactly are TADs, and how do they work? Let’s break it down.

What Are TADs?

TADs, or Temporary Anchorage Devices, are small titanium screws placed in the jawbone to provide a stable anchor for tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. Unlike braces or aligners, which rely on teeth for anchorage, TADs give orthodontists a fixed point of resistance, allowing for precise tooth movement.

Why Are TADs Used?

TADs help control tooth movement more effectively and can:

  • Speed up treatment by reducing the need for additional appliances.
  • Improve bite correction by moving teeth in ways that traditional braces alone may not achieve.
  • Avoid extractions or surgery in some cases by providing an alternative anchorage point.
  • Reduce unwanted side effects, such as the movement of nearby teeth.

How Are TADs Placed?

The placement of TADs is a quick and minimally invasive procedure:

  1. A small amount of anaesthetic is applied to numb the area.
  2. The TAD is gently inserted into the bone between the teeth.
  3. The process takes just a few minutes, with little to no discomfort.
  4. Once no longer needed, the TAD is easily removed, and the bone heals naturally.

Are TADs Painful?

Most patients experience little to no discomfort during or after TAD placement. There may be mild pressure at first, but this typically subsides within a few days.

Caring for TADs

Maintaining good oral hygiene is key to preventing irritation or infection. Patients should:

  • Brush gently around the TAD.
  • Use an antibacterial mouth rinse to keep the area clean.
  • Avoid touching the TAD with fingers or the tongue.

Are TADs Right for You?

Not all orthodontic treatments require TADs, but they can be especially beneficial in cases involving complex tooth movements or severe misalignments. Your orthodontist will determine if TADs are the right choice for your treatment plan.

At Broadbeach Orthodontics, we use cutting-edge techniques like TADs to provide the best possible results for our patients. If you have any questions about your orthodontic treatment, feel free to reach out or book a consultation!
