When it comes to eating lollies (candy or sweets) during orthodontic treatment, it’s generally not a good idea, and here’s why:

1. Risk of Damage to Braces or Aligners

  • Braces: Hard lollies can easily break brackets and wires. Sticky or chewy sweets, like toffees or gummy bears, can get stuck in the braces, pulling on the brackets and wires, potentially causing them to dislodge or bend. Repairing broken braces means extra trips to the orthodontist and a longer treatment time.
  • Aligners: While less susceptible to direct damage, sticky sweets can get caught between the teeth and the aligner, causing discomfort and potential pressure points. They can also make it harder to keep aligners clean, which is vital to maintain oral hygiene.

2. Increased Risk of Cavities and Gum Disease

  • Sugary lollies, especially when they are sticky or gummy, can easily adhere to braces and aligners, making it harder to remove plaque and food particles from teeth. This leads to an increase in bacteria that produce acid, contributing to tooth decay and gum disease. Cavities can delay orthodontic treatment and, in severe cases, may require removing braces temporarily for treatment.

3. Oral Hygiene Challenges

  • Maintaining good oral hygiene is already more challenging with braces due to the extra crevices where food and plaque can get trapped. Consuming sugary lollies exacerbates this issue, increasing the likelihood of white spot lesions (areas of demineralisation) around the brackets and wires. These white spots are often the first signs of tooth decay.

4. Alternatives and Recommendations

  • Opt for sugar-free lollies if you must satisfy a sweet craving. These are less likely to contribute to tooth decay.
  • Hard or sticky lollies should be avoided entirely. Instead, choose soft, non-sticky treats like yoghurt, pudding, or smoothies. These are easier to clean off the teeth and less likely to cause damage.
  • After consuming any sweets, it’s important to brush and floss thoroughly to remove any residue and protect the teeth from decay.

5. Aligners and Lollies

  • If you’re wearing clear aligners like Invisalign or Angel Aligners, it’s essential to remove the aligners before consuming any sugary foods or drinks. Sugar can get trapped between the aligner and the teeth, increasing the risk of cavities. Always clean your teeth and aligners before putting them back in.

6. Orthodontist’s Advice

  • Your orthodontist will typically provide guidelines on what to eat and what to avoid during treatment. Following these guidelines not only protects your teeth and braces but also ensures that your treatment progresses on schedule.

In summary, while lollies might be tempting, avoiding them is the best choice for maintaining the health of your teeth and the integrity of your orthodontic appliances. If you’re unsure about specific foods, always consult with your orthodontist, as they can provide personalized advice based on your treatment plan.
