With Cyclone Alfred bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and potential power outages to the Gold Coast, staying safe is everyone’s top priority. But if you have braces, aligners, or other orthodontic appliances, it’s also important to be prepared for any unexpected issues.
At Broadbeach Orthodontics, we want to make sure you and your smile stay safe through the storm. Here are some essential orthodontic tips to keep in mind during severe weather conditions.
🌪 Emergency Kit for Braces
Just like you prepare an emergency kit for your home, having a small braces care kit on hand can help if an issue arises while you’re stuck indoors. Pack the following:
✅ Orthodontic wax – Great for covering any poking wires or brackets.
✅ Nail clippers or small scissors – Can be used to trim a broken wire if needed.
✅ Floss or interdental brushes – Helps remove stuck food if power outages limit water use.
✅ Pain relief (paracetamol/ibuprofen) – In case of soreness.
✅ A small mirror & flashlight – To check your braces in low light.
✅ Aligner case – If you’re wearing clear aligners, always store them safely when not in use.
🚨 What to Do in an Orthodontic Emergency
If Cyclone Alfred disrupts power or travel, you may not be able to visit us immediately. Here’s what to do if you experience:
🔹 Poking wires – Cover with orthodontic wax or trim carefully with nail clippers.
🔹 Loose brackets – If it’s still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax.
🔹 Lost aligners or retainers – Keep wearing your previous set until you can get a replacement.
🔹 Soreness from new aligners or braces adjustments – Stick to soft foods and take pain relief if needed.
🌊 Braces & Storm Survival Tips
✔️ Stay hydrated – Have water available to rinse your mouth if needed.
✔️ Stick to soft foods – Avoid hard or sticky snacks that could damage braces.
✔️ Keep aligners safe – If evacuating, bring your aligners, retainer case, and orthodontic kit with you.
✔️ Stay indoors & avoid injuries – Strong winds and flying debris can cause accidents—be extra cautious.
