Heading back to school is an exciting time, but for students with braces or aligners, it can come with a few extra challenges. At Broadbeach Orthodontics, we want to make sure your child’s orthodontic journey stays on track while they shine in the classroom. Here are our top tips to help them have a great start to the term:

1. Pack an Orthodontic Kit

A small, portable orthodontic kit can save the day. Make sure it includes:

  • A travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Orthodontic wax for any poking wires or irritation
  • Floss or floss threaders
  • A small mirror for quick checks
  • Lip balm to keep lips hydrated throughout the day

2. Snack Smart

Choose braces-friendly snacks that are easy to chew and won’t damage brackets or wires. Great options include:

  • Yoghurt
  • Soft fruits like bananas and berries
  • Cheese sticks
  • Smoothies
  • Sandwiches with soft bread

Avoid hard or sticky foods such as nuts, popcorn, or chewy lollies, which can lead to breakages and unnecessary trips to the orthodontist.

3. Stay Hydrated

Water is your child’s best friend! Encourage them to sip water throughout the day to keep their mouth fresh and help rinse away food particles that can get trapped in braces or aligners.

4. Protect Your Smile During Sports

If your child participates in sports, ensure they’re wearing an orthodontic-friendly mouthguard. It’s a must to protect both their teeth and their orthodontic appliances.

5. Keep Aligners Safe

For students with clear aligners, such as Invisalign or Angel Aligners, it’s important to:

  • Always store aligners in their case when not in use. This prevents them from being lost or accidentally thrown away.
  • Avoid wrapping aligners in napkins or leaving them loose in lunchboxes.

6. Plan Appointments in Advance

We understand school schedules can be busy. That’s why we recommend booking orthodontic appointments outside of important school activities. Regular check-ups are key to ensuring treatment stays on track.

7. Build Confidence

For students who may feel self-conscious about braces, remind them that they’re part of a journey to a beautiful smile. At Broadbeach Orthodontics, we offer colourful elastics to let them express their personality and have fun with their treatment.

8. Be Ready for Minor Emergencies

Accidents happen, so it’s helpful to know how to handle common orthodontic issues. If a wire is poking or something feels uncomfortable, orthodontic wax can provide temporary relief until you can visit us. Don’t hesitate to call Broadbeach Orthodontics if your child needs urgent care.
